A Small Cambodian Grocery in Bronx

According to a 2013 Census Bureau estimate, 45.8% of the Bronx’s population was white, 43.3% was black or African American, 4.2% Asian, 3.0% American Indian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, and 3.3% of two or more races. In addition, 54.6% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino origin, of any race.

Even among this demographic, when you walk inside this grocery store, you feel like you are somewhere in Southeast Asia. This is a photo story about this little Cambodian family-owned business.

The San family started this store since 2011. Siblings are taking turns to open the store.
San usually comes in the early morning on Monday and Tuesday to help her sister opening the store.
They has a cat in the store, but usually keep it at the warehouse after opening the store.
The supermarket is not so big, but the rent still goes up every year. Now it is about $360 a month.

Bolnarin San, 49, and her sister Bophavann San, 53 run the store together. Bophavann stays at the store more often.
Bophavann likes sitting at the cashier and gazing outside when the business is not so busy.
A customer ordered a whole box of instant noodles. Bolnarin was trying to get it from the top of the shelf.
The store doesn’t allow card, except foodstamp.
Cambodian community in the Bronx is quite small. So everyone comes in the store knows each other. Bolnarin was chatting with a customer.
The store is well known around the neighbourhood for its reputation of fresh Asian vegetables.
The Cambodian community at the Bronx is very supportive of each other.
Sokdeth Tee, 28, is the nephew of Bolnarin’s husband. He studies English in the morning and comes to the store to help in the afternoon.
Each pack of the vegetable is about 0.2 pounds.
The Sans and the customers maintain good relationship. Same people comes in the store to pick up a little bit goods everyday.
A customer left with satisfaction.
